City Traders In Kampala Close Shops

Business owners across various sectors within Kampala’s Central Business District have ceased operations in protest against what they perceive as unfair tax administration measures and trading conditions.

Unlike the partial closures observed on April 8, 2024, today’s shutdown encompasses the entire city, with only a handful of individuals stationed at the entrances of select shops. The decrease in city population is notable compared to usual.

Traders have expressed longstanding grievances, spanning over two years, including concerns regarding tax policy enforcement, particularly with the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS), which they claim is inequitable. Additionally, issues surrounding trader-manufacturer relations persist.

Despite numerous attempts at engagement between the government and trader representatives, satisfactory resolutions have not been achieved. Traders are adamant about the necessity of a meeting with the president to address their grievances comprehensively and seek lasting solutions.”
